Songwriting, unfortunately, is not easily taught. For the most part, would-be songwriters must find their own way by listening to what other songwriters say about their craft. On one hand this can be very challenging. However, doing so will enable you to develop your own unique writing style and original sounding songs.
Songs are ususally written in one of two ways: either the music is composed first and then followed by the lyrics, and vice versa. A famous example of this approach is the songwriting team of Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Bernie would famously come up with the lyrics for a song and hand them to Elton who would then set the words to music.
